My Brush With Sales

31 August 2012

As featured on Women 2.0

I’m shy. Sometimes being social is hard. I have to confess I did not have the guts to start a company till I started meeting startup founders for work. Then the energy gets to you. And before you know it, you want to do it too!

So here I was at the crossroads looking for my beta customers to run an online contest on my brand new website, Chitsie, and sponsor $1000 in user prizes.

I kept tailoring the offering and reworking my pitch as I went along. I’m happy to share some of the things that have worked well for me:

Know that selling is tough. Get creative. Think beyond.

Be prepared for a lot of No’s along the way. It depends on how hard you want it.

Knock doors. I was able to meet the VP of Marketing of a pretty smart firm this way. I gave him a demo and the meeting lasted an hour!

If you’re up for cold calling, timing is important. You need to get past the front desk. Afternoon breaks are a good time to catch executives.

Get LinkedIn. Leverage your existing network. Make new connections. You’ll be surprised to find out that most of your prospects live here.

Explore. Ask. Network.

Offer value. Give specials. Make it easy for your clients.

Walk up to people. Start a conversation. Get them interested. Follow up.

Did you know that Facebook company pages let you “Message” the page admins? I found a client on Facebook just like that.

Know where to stop. Don’t be a pain in the neck. Or sound like the telemarketer you always want to hang up on.

A lot of times people will leave you with: “I’ll get back to you.” Sometimes they will but most times they will not. They don’t have to. It is alright. Go to next.

If a meeting goes really well, don’t think it’s a done deal till you actually close it. Keep looking. Have a back-up plan.

Be on the look-out for an opportunity. I found my newest client at a birthday party!

Once you sign-up, don’t disappear. Be there for your clients at all times.

Be genuine. Don’t fake it. Smile, and smile often.

While you’re at it, do check out my website, Chitsie, and hopefully win a prize. The current set of brand contests end on Friday, August 31. So get your entries in.

Happy selling!

Meet the Winners

28 August 2012

We announced our first set of Champs! Felicitating the winners and featuring them on Chit-Champs and Facebook was one of the most rewarding experiences.

Subhra Mohanty, a "happily married" IT professional from Indiana, US won the Rock Star Title. With it, came a ton of awesome prizes including cash prize of $100, a $100 gift certificate from "The Inspired Cookie," an annual membership to The Founding Moms Community and a personally autographed book from speaker, author, entrepreneur, Jill Salzman.

You too can win the Rock Star Title by accumulating the maximum number of stars in any given period.

Subhra also won the first prize in "Mom Entrepreneur Challenge" by The Founding Moms, a growing community of mom entrepreneurs. She won an hour of business coaching from serial entrepreneur, Jill Salzman who is working on her third entrepreneurial venture.

Subhra said, "I enjoy participating in all sorts of competitions on Chitsie.com." She heard about us from our awesome brand ambassador, Abhinav Sharma.

Say "hi" to Jana Raquel Wickham, a network marketer and married mom of two from California.

Jana won the first prize in "Name the Bar Game" from The Inspired Cookie, the San Francisco-based baking goods company. She received a years' supply of brownie mix, and a $250 gift certificate.

"I love to win! What a sweet surprise to be emailed that I did," said Jana. "My kids are even more excited to get their hands on my 'Inspired treats.'"

Guess who won the top prize in the StartupGrid campaign? A startup founder himself! Co-founder of Pyramid PR and a student of San Jose State University, Felix W Do took home the grand prize of $500 in cash.

Felix, who is working on his own marketing and design department, plans to use his winnings towards maintaining Revamped Imaging's programs and equipment.

And yes, he was super thrilled to win!

While these folks walked away with the top honors, we had a total of 12 awesome winners. Did you know that you too can join Chitsie's Winners Club! Participation is free, fun and rewarding.

The current set of contests end on Friday, Aug 31. Participate. Win. Celebrate.

Star Intern Challenge

18 May 2012

Are you up for a challenge? This is how it works: we sign you up, train you, challenge you and reward the best. While the winner receives $300 in sponsor prizes, $50 in cash, a winner's certificate and an exclusive feature, all participants receive a certificate of completion and a gift certificate.

The basic requirements of the program are that you need to be competitive and creative.

We’re looking for students and recent grads to promote Chitsie to their social networks, groups and forums. Yes, you can do this with school or another project or internship.

If you think Chitsie is a cool website that you might want to share with family, friends and even strangers; that this could be a great learning experience and a ton of fun too, read on.

Chitsie is a fun go-to place for brand promotions, online contests and business games, where users can win huge prizes for playing around with really cool brands. Participation is fun, free, and rewarding. We are a Silicon Valley-based startup.

We’re looking for star interns who believe in our concept, and can help us spread the cheer.

Recruiting now! Limited spots!

Ideal candidates must have huge social networks on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr and/or Pinterest, or be a part of a fraternity. They must be power users of social media and yield some influence with their networks.

If you’re selected, we will train you and then pit you against each other in a “Star Intern Challenge” to see who walks away with the ultimate honor.

The winner will get $100 in cash, $250 in sponsor prizes, winner’s certificate, and other gift certificates. And we’ll even do a story on you. Yay! All the contenders will receive a certificate of completion and a gift certificate. Everyone will be felicitated at a star party we throw at the end of the challenge.

Interested? Create an account at http://www.chitsie.com/, play around and see if this one is for you. Then drop us an email at contact@chitsie.com, telling us what makes you an awesome candidate, with a link to any one of your social networks.

We look forward to hearing from you. Good luck! ~

Say “hello” to our awesome brand ambassadors!

15 April 2012

Meet Jerry Kidd – Ex-Vietnam war veteran, social media strategist, real estate mogul. Rewind to the year 1968. The Viet Nam War was at its height. Jerry dropped out of college to join the Marine Corps and volunteer for service.  The Marines taught him to be “self-reliant,” and pushed him to limits that he thought he would never reach.

Fast forward to 2012! Today Jerry Kidd runs Social Media Marketing Interactive, where he helps small businesses identify their target markets, and leverage social media to drive their marketing efforts. He’s also an instructor, trainer and consultant to brokers and agents in the real estate industry. Talking about his engagement with us, Jerry said, “I’m looking forward to the ride!”

On the other side of the Pacific, in India, lives our other very talented brand ambassador – Abhinav Sharma. Winner of a reality TV show, stand-up comic, an application developer at Adobe Systems, Abhinav is a popular guy. He shot to instant fame after getting engaged to Ratan, one of the most sought after television actresses in Swayamwar Season 3 – Ratan Ka Rishta, the Indian version of The Bachelorette.

For Abhinav, winning is a habit. Sports captain, head boy, best student of the year, debater, and a winner many times at many events... Abhinav has a long list of achievements. He is “extremely confident” about our product and thinks, “Chitsie is a win-win solution for both companies and consumers.”

Abhinav and Jerry have one thing in common: They are both achievers in their own stride. We feel very fortunate to have them on board. Actually, we had to get them on our side since chitsie.com recognizes and rewards winners.
